Domestic / Residential Fire Extinguishers

Having fire extinguishers as well as smoke alarms will give you the means to control small fires in and around your home if you haven't got, or it is not possible or practical to install a fire sprinkler system.

Because fires are divided into different categories the method of extinguishing and the extinguishing agent or material that's used is different. However, with a home fire sprinkler system the extinguishing agent is water.

The categories or classification of fire risks and the methods and agents used by extinguishers to extinguish fires can be seen in the table below:

Fire Risk

Fire Blanket

BCF*

* Bromochlorodifluoromethane (BCF) is an inert gas used for fire suppression and mainly used in places like museums, switching centers in telecommunication and computer mainframe rooms

Note:

It is very important and essential that the correct equipment is used to control fires, using the wrong extinguishing agent can make things worse.

Fire blankets can also be used to smother and put out fires on people. All extinguishers and fire blankets should be located in readily accessible positions in your home.

Thanks for the advice for removing an air lock from an indirect system. Had to change an inlet on my cistern. First time I have tried any home plumbing. After draining the cold tank system air locked when I refilled the tank. Garden hose and mains pressure up the tap sorted my problems. Would not have known what to do without the advice on the site. Many thanks Sean United Kingdom.

An excellent site. I have found it very usefull. I am currently in the design phase of a new house and have be pondering which heat system to use. From your site I have been able to choose the right system. Ross New Zealand
